Perian covers a lot of formats, this page lists what QuickTime Components that Perian obsoletes, and the functionality it obsoletes.
Some of these QuickTime Components are only obsoleted by Perian for playback reasons.
QuickTime Components are stored in /Library/QuickTime or ~/Library/QuickTime.
