Description

i copied the component to both the system's library as well as the user-specific folder. i am trying to playback VOB video files with AC-3 audio tracks. i am not sure if this is possible, but if it is, i was wondering what the problem may be.

Sorry about the late reply: Do you have something which allows QuickTime to read .vob files? If so, then this should allow you to play ac3 data within the .vob. I am not aware of anything that allows QuickTime to read .vob files, but I may be wrong.

Apple's MPEG2 component (you can buy it through the Apple Store) allows this. I think it's about $20.

PS : the component works fine for this, with Apple's MPEG2 component.

  • status changed from new to closed.
  • resolution set to worksforme.

Closing since anonymous reported that it works.

Be sure you have the component within Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

As far as I can tell, this is the fault of the VOB demuxer (apple's fault). I have tried it myself, and no matter what I do, it doesn't show that an audio track exists. Even if you don't have the codec for the audio track, it should show that it exists and give you a warning that you don't have the codec when you try to play it.

Does that mean the component cant play any MPEG2 muxed files that contain AC3 audio?? I've had the same issue with VOB's, as well as a couple of music video's that give the same Movie Info in Quicktime: MPEG2 Muxed. Video plays fine for both as I have the Apple MPEG2 component, but no audio unless I use VLC...

Replying to anonymous:

No, it means that Apple's VOB and MPEG2 components don't tell QuickTime that there is any AC3 audio. This has nothing to do with the component. The component can't play anything if QuickTime thinks there is nothing to play.

As a condition of being a licensee of the DVD Forum's specifications, Apple has to prevent anyone from being able to copy or modify DVD content. This is why you'll never see the ability for QuickTime to playback commercial DVDs.... not unless someone figures out ways around the roadblocks Apple is putting in the way.

Its a shame. I'd like to see it - you'd like to see it... hell, even Apple would love to see it, im sure, but their hands are tied by the draconian DVD Forum.
