Quicktime 7.1.3 still won't play the sound in a avi after installing the a52codec.

Description

I have just purchased a MacBook? pro 17" with the intel duo, running mac os 10.4.8 and quicktime 7.1.3, after installing the a52codec files as per the instructions on the previous page i attemped to open an avi file, the video plays perfectly but there is still no audio. If anyone can shed some light it would be greatly apreciated. The thing that bugs me is my previous laptop a powerbook g4 after installing the ac3 codec plays avi's in Quicktime straight away without any problems. Starting to wonder if the purchase was a good idea?

Did you restart QuickTime Player (as per the instructions)?

If you open the file in QuickTime Player, and get info on the file, what does it report the audio as? Also look at what is listed in cmd-j if you have pro.

New MacBook? Pro? Did you install something that bypasses Apple's AVI parser, like Perian (http://www.perian.org/) or DivX? I bet something is installed on the old laptop, but hasn't been installed on the new one (it's something that is needed for AC3 and VBR MP3 audio in an AVI file, because the default AVI parser doesn't handle it).

This system keeps marking my comments as spam...hopefully this time it will work...

This codec doesn't work on my iBook G4. I have followed the instructions; when I hit cmd-i on a file I've opened, no audio information is listed, though VLC identifies the audio part of the same file as a52.

Oops - this component is working, my problem is with the XviD component I was using. Never mind....

Sorry about your comments being marked as spam. Spammers started to hit my trac and as such I had to take several measures to prevent them.

Glad to hear that you got it working; marking as fixed. If the A52Comonent were not working, and QT saw the audio track, you should have gotten a warning about a component missing.

Perhaps perian would make a good replacement for your XviD component?
